A primary election candidate's press spokesman was an idealist.
The sentence says: "He finds his idealism and belief in his man taking a back seat to backroom political dealing and manipulative power plays."
Is it saying he is losing faith in his man and politics?
Thanks a lot.

In my opinion, it means that the protagonist either doesn't want to get involved or doesn't mind if someone does it. I guess we'll have to watch the movie!
