stalled in labour

I'll be very thankful if you want to help me understand the meaning of highlighted phrases below:

"Mama was always wanted when a woman was ready to bring a child to light. Once she even helped a donkey stalled in labour."

The (female) donkey, was in labour - giving birth. However, the process had stalled - it had come to a sudden stop, as a car engine can do.

This may have been a joke as well, as an animal can be 'stalled' in the sense of 'put in a stall'. I doubt it though.
