I vaguely understand "tip the scale at 100 lbs" to mean "weigh 100 lbs". But in some articles, I found expression "tip the scales" to have (or intended to have) the same meaning. Could "tip the scale" be different from "tip the scales"?

I know only 'tip the scales at...'
COCA has 13 examples of 'tip the scales at...' and only one of 'tip the scale at...'
