    Default grit

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to help to me to make the proper choice of an interpretation of the term in bold in the following sentence?

They had enough grit to hold out in the face of real hardship.

grit = stamina, courage, steadfastness, perseverance, bravery, courage, determination, guts, spirit, tenacity, toughness

Determination, and while it's a combination of physical and mental, I'd say it more heavily weighted toward mental. I think of your list, "guts" is the closest.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
