Does anyone think "the" is necessary before "open air"?

I don't, but then I don't understand the meaning of "in open air" either. Do you mean as opposed to "in an enclosed area"?

I did intend "in (the) open air" to be the opposite of "in an enclosed area". I've probably made quite a few errors in my original post.

As far as I'm concerned it should be "in the open air".
