    Default Gerund or infinitive

Dear teacher's! Can you check this sentences, please?

Why don't you stop reading this. I don't understand a word.

    and

let's stop to drink something. I'm thirsty.

Where should I put gerund and where infinitive?

Why don't you stop reading this. I don't understand a word. This is correct, but unlikely.

    and

Let's stop to drink something. I'm thirsty. This is correct.

    This is a gerund.

Let's stop to drink something. I'm thirsty.
    This is an infinitive.

Where should I put "gerund" and where "infinitive"?
You've just provided a classic example of differences between gerunds and infinitives!

    REMINDER: NOT A TEACHER

    (1) You have asked a really good -- and difficult -- question.

    (2) I suggest that you go to the "search box" at this website and

type in "gerund or infinitive." You will find many helpful threads.

    (3) Some things are really difficult to understand. For example,

can you guess the difference between (a) and (b)?

    (a) I was tired. So I stopped to drink a soda.

    (b) I had realized that I was killing myself. So I stopped drinking five years ago.

    (4) I am sure that you understand that (a) = I stopped for a few minutes in order to

drink something. Then I returned to work; (b) = I stopped the habit of drinking liquor.

In my own case, I am trying to stop eating so many sugary things. (But they are

    so delicious!)
