Default staff terms usage

hi! Could you consult me about a matter...
every organization has a special department on staff matters such as who was enrolled at what time or dismissed at what date, what the exact position name which an employee holds, the conditions of employment, truancies and so on. Such data base should have a certain field concerning a unique number of an employee. how is this number usually called in english or american organizations? - "a clock number"? "an ID number"? or something different?
thank you!

Are you probably speaking about a personnel number or an employee number ? I'm not British or American but I work for a British company and they use Personnel No. in accounting reports etc.

Yes, exactly. It is an ID number used to enter you into payroll and other data spreadsheets. We also have it on our electronic badges

Staff No. seems to mean the same, but I'm not sure.
