In the US, we tend to use the singular for nouns like "family." Other dialects tend to use the plural.
We'd be more likely to say:
The company is
The team is
The jury is
The family is (or was, in this case.)
Others might say
The company are
The team are
The jury are
The family were
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
Yes, I've noticed this too. In American English, they would say
Real Madrid is eager to win the Champions League for the 10th time.
Many British sources would say
Real Madrid are eager to win the Champions League for the 10th time.
