who/whom "Tell whoever is waiting to come in."
"Tell whomever is waiting to come in."
Which one is correct and why?

Threadstarter / Original Poster Re: who/whom This is a question from a book. I thought it's "whomever", because if you "tell" somebody, then the word after "tell" should be an objective right? but the answer was "whoever"! The book didn't offer any explanation...so I want to know why

Whoever is waiting.I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
