could you please explain the meaning and function of as in:
I dont know what them eyes was the windows to and I guess I’d as soon not know.
thank you...![]()
vredes, please try to use capital letters and quotation marks to make your posts easier to understand. That sentence is an attempt to portray some form of dialect. More natural English might be:
I don't know what those eyes were windows to, and I guess that I would sooner/rather not know.
The speaker had in mind the expression, "The eyes are windows to the soul".
Google the phrase eyes are the window to the soul and you will find your answer.
ONLY A NON-TEACHER'S OPINION
(1) Thank you for asking about "as," my second favorite word in English.
(2) As Teacher Fivejedjon said, "(just) as soon" = rather, more gladly.
(3) I found this sentence in a book written by a great grammarian named
George O. Curme:
I would just as soon stay at home as go.
(a) So it is my only my guess that your sentence is a short way to say:
...and I guess I would just as soon not know as [I would] know.
In other words: I would more gladly NOT know than I would gladly know.
(P.S. Credit to Professors House and Harman for explaining to us ordinary
speakers that "rather" = gladly.)
Thanks so much....![]()
