Please explain to me the usage of "whose task it was to" in the following context:

"In English law, the trust was one of the tools created by the Court whose task it was to administer the law"

I do nbot understand this because I would use "whose task was" instead of "whose task it was to". Thank you

'It was their task to administer the law.' That's where the it comes from.
'Administering the law was their task'. That;s where the zero-it variant comes from.

They are both acceptable. 'Whose task it was to...' sounds to me more formal (and sometimes pompous).
