Hi,
How are you?
I have an assignment about prepositions in general. so, first, I need to know how many types of prepositions in English?
I read many articles about prepositions and most of them divide (the prepositions)
into to types: a) preposition of place and location b) preposition of time.
and the others articles divide them to semantic classification as:
- spatial relations: location (inclusion, exclusion, proximity), direction (origin, path, endpoint)
- temporal relations
- comparison: equality, opposition, price, rate
- content: source, material, subject matter
- agent
- instrument, means, manner
- cause, purpose
so, I classified them into 3 types:
- prepositions of place.
- prepositions of direction.
- prepositions of time.
but my teacher said no its not just these types. There is more than these....
so, what is the right classification of preposition?
would you please help me and tell me the right classification?
The dateline for this assignment is on Sunday.![]()
I am afraid that we can't help. As it says at the top of this page, "Please don't ask us to do or correct your homework; this is a place to discuss language."
However, you seem to have found a fair bit of information for yourself - the first part of your post mentions rather more than three types.
Oh, I'm sorry I didn't notice that.I'm really sorry.
But I'm kind of confused about types of prepositions.
And I really need the help not just because my homework, but I also need it to discuss it with my classmate because almost of the students don't know these types.
NO matter what I get from this homework but the important how much I understand from it.
Thank you.
You've reduced a list of seven categories to three- and place and direction are covered in a single category in the other list.
