Hi teachers,
Did /did not must be followed by an original word?
Is that right?

dean
Hello dean,
Please provide some more information. What do you mean by an original word?

Hi SMS,
1) She did not cry yesterday.
2) I did not see anything.
3) I did call her last night.

dean
All three of your sentences are correct. What is it that is confusing you?Originally Posted by dean
Hi SMS,
At first I am not sure which one is right, For examples;
1) I did call/ called her last night. (did + original word or did + original word+ ed)
2) She did not cry/ cried yesterday. ( did + original word or did + original word + ed)
Regards,
dean
Hello dean ..
I think
I did call her last night ... is correct
She did not cry yesterday ... is correct
because if it's not so we are oppose to the rule which say :
Use the present infinitive without to , not the past tense after the auxiliary did .
OK. I see what you mean. If you use "did", then you do not use a word + "ed". So, the correct formations are:Originally Posted by dean
1. a) I did call her last night.
b) I called her last night.
c) I did called her last night.Oh no!
2. a) She did not cry yesterday.
I'll get back to you with the formal grammar rules in a bit. In the meantime, I hope that I along with Herbiji have helped to clear up your confusion!
Have a pleasant night!

Additionally, only one verb can carry tense, and if there are two verbs, then the auxiliary carries tense:
EX: DO + CALL => does call, did call
"DO" changes to "does" and "did". The -s on "does" and the -d on "did" are the same as the -s on "calls" and the -d on "called".
In short, there should be only one -s or -d per verb string.
Hope that helps.![]()
Thanks Casiopea,
It's really help.
