Would you pls explain the meaning of this sentence for me:
"Bacteria in the asphalt itself would have consumed some of the tissues of other than bones, and the asphalt itself would dissolve what was left, at the same time impregnating and beautifully preserving the saturated bones, rendering them dark brown and shiny."

Soft tissue would have been eaten by bacteria, and the asphalt would have dissolved the rest, then soaked into the bones, leaving brown shiny bones as all that remained.
