Hello,
Does 'he had a car with him' sound OK in this context:
While Bob was walking, he met his old friend Tom. He told him about the party and Tom said that he had a car with him and he could give him a ride.
What if I say: 'Tom said his car was nearby.'?
Thank you for the time and help.
He doesn't have a car "with" him unless he was driving at the moment. Yes, say he had a car nearby. Or simply that he had a car.
I disagree with Dave. At least where I live, "I have my car with me," is often used to mean, "I drove here." It is very common.
On second thought, I will concede the point. It just didn't seem natural to me at first. Of course, where I live I would almost always have my car.
