Mel went to a veteran's office to find someone's information, and she's worried if she is troubling the guy, the clerk. and he says like the underlined, and I don't understand the whole sentence. Does he prefer helping her to cleaning up with a broom? What is "this day breed"? I saw him holding a broom to clean up.

It might have been "debris", not "day breed" - they sound similar. Debris would work much better in your example.

Note that British English mangles the French stress. We say /'debri:/. American English - maybe because of colonial history (Louisiana) - gets the stress right.
