It's an exclamation of surprise or shock. I think it possibly came about as a rhyming alternative to "Jesus" which is used a lot. Some religious people are offended by the use of that word so other words turn up as very similar-sounding alternatives.

It's a somewhat dated expression of surprise or pleasure. It was originally a euphemistic form of 'Jesus'.
