habit in the simple past

When we use 'used to' refers that It has finished now.But Does 'simple past' contain the same rule?

He used to play the violin when he was a child. (He doesn't play no more)

But,

A) He played the violin when he was a child. (Does he finish playing the violin? Or Does it depend on the text?)
