Default and fast trying to make up

‘As I see it, I’m in the second half of my life now, and fast trying to make up for lost time.’ And how!
("365 steps to self-confidence" by David Lawrence Preston)

What role does 'fast' play here from a grammatical point of view?

    Thanks.

It's an adverb unless the speaker talks about abstaining from food, which would be rather strange.
