What "go long" mean??

It's a term used in American football. The man who has the football will tell the man who is to catch the football to run a long distance because he is going to throw the football a long ways. He tells him to "go long", as in a long distance. So...the man is saying that he will pass the salt but also that he will throw it - a long distance.
