    Default Urban Guerrilla Warfare

    Quotes from VOA news:
The streets of Rome saw scenes of urban guerrilla warfare that they had not witnessed in years.
    ...
"Politics do not do the interests of the population," he said. "Politics does its own private interests, especially this government. We have seen it at all levels with the corruption and bad management. And those who pay for all this are citizens who pay their taxes and do not know where the money goes and where it is being invested."
    My questions are:
1.How can streets of Rome see ?is it supposed to say people on the streets of Rome ?
    2. What does Urban Guerrilla Warfare mean?
    3. in the first sentence they say "politics do" and in the second sentence they say "politics does". do or does? I'm confused.
    Thanks.

    NOT A TEACHER

    (1) If I understand my sources, the first sentence should also use "does."

    (2) It depends on whether you consider the word to refer to a group of items or to a single topic:

    His politics are liberal.
    Politics is a fascinating subject.

(Source: The Columbia Guide to Standard American English, 1993)

My notes: For example, someone might say: "My politics are none of your business."
(This is just an example. Of course, one should not speak that rudely.) Many people say "Politics is a dirty [dishonest] business."

    (3) Use the singular verb when it refers to the art or science: Politics is the study of government.

Use the plural in reference to practices: His politics are contemptible [do not deserve other people's respect].

(Source: The New York Times Manual of Style and Usage, 1999.)
