    Default is "I was" optional?

I did not have strong feelings towards religion when (I was) young and felt that my parents were somehow exaggerating. I thought, “I am just an ordinary person, what kind of mission could I possibly have?”

    Is "I was" optional?

    Thanks.

It can be omitted, but it sounds better (to me) if it is retained.
