Question not sure about the setting of a novel

Dear teachers:

I have a question.

Right now in english class we are doing the novel "the chrysalids".

Our english gave us two questions, each have to be answered in 500 words.

The first question was: how does the setting of the novel impact(or affect) the plot or characters. And I have a question for that. what is the setting of a story? the setting includes the time, location, and most important the evironment or the society, right? i'm just askin g to be sure.

a very troubled student
