    I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

    As it stands, it means that the church was built after 1866. This is an unlikely utterance, but could occur if I were looking at an 1866 map and saw that the church was not marked at the place where it now stands.

    With older buildings, the word 'founded' is often used: 'The church was founded in the 17th century, but the bell-tower was not built until 1866.
