    Default Call to/Call

    Dear teachers,
In the following sentence, is "called to" correct? Or we should just say "called"?
"Volunteer work," I answered. The woman looked at me strangely and then she called to a man behind the counter.
In the dictionary I couldn't find an example with "call to".
    Thanks

Both are acceptable, but I would use "called to" to be absolutely certain that the reader understood that she used her voice to call out to a person behind the counter.

Otherwise, in today's uber-wired technological world (my new term - don't bother looking it up) some people may take it to mean that she turned around, took out her cell phone and "called" a man behind the counter.
