Could you explain to me what the sentence I wrote refers to?

Collage students were told they would be participating in research about visual perception.

Collage students were told =It was told to collage students ?

It's already in the passive.

Does it comprise all the verbs or just the verbs which use without any preposition like 'to' ?

For example,

I was given an apple. (that is ok) Because I used two objects in passive.

But what about one object?

' I was given' means ' someone gave an apple to us' or we can refer that ' we were given to someone or something' ?

Aliii, note the spelling of the word "college" in Barb's post. "Collage" is also a word and means something completely different.
