Hi there,
What is the plural form of the word 'breaking'? Is it 'breakings'?
Here is the sentence that I am trying to phrase:
The above choice of parameters ensures that there are no bond breakings or chain crossings.
Thank you!
Consider it (and crossing, in this case) to be uncountable nouns.
You may want to consider this a time when the passive makes sense: No bonds were broken, nor were any chains crossed. (Whatever that means). If you are bold, you can even write it in the active voice: to ensure we did not break any bonds nor cross any chains.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
You can also treat these words as uncountable.
"The above choice of parameters ensures that there is no bond breaking or chain crossing."
And of course, if there is no single bond breaking, there are no plural bond breakings [sic].
If you actually wanted bond breaking and chain crossing [note again uncountable], you could still write, " ... assures that there will be bond breaking and chain crossing."
