Default to+verb+ing or verb + ing

"Generally, they are few issues have threatened the external validity of the study results such as one of the authors reported owning stocks with drug companies."

I am always confuse when should I use "ing", ..the authors reported owning stocks with drug companies or reported to own?

Would somebody please help me with this?
