Default Methods of library stock systematization

    Hello,

This is a sentence in one of my students' assignments:
    'Methods of library stock systematization.'

I am not familiar with the activities done in libraries, but I would change the word 'systematization' for 'indexing' or 'catalogueing'.

    What is your opinion?

Thank you for the time and help.

    NOT A TEACHER

I think it rather depends on where or from whom your student is learning their English. Library stock systemization may be perfectly acceptable in the US, but in the UK it sounds a bit nonsensical. In the UK – as you suggest – indexing or cataloguing (note spelling) would be much better. It depends entirely on the context, but the sentence could read:

    Cataloguing/indexing methods for library stock

    or

    Methods of cataloguing/indexing library stock

Any of them sound fine to me. To systematize is to arrange into a set order. My sense is that indexing and cataloging is confined to listing material - to put information relating to the material into a database, for example. Systematization encompasses not only the listing of material but also may speak to how this material is physically displayed.
