    If an expression is considered idiomatic, it is usually because the meaning of the expression as a whole is different from the meanings of the individual parts added together. If you blow your top, for example, you become angry. It is impossible to guess the meaning of the expression blow one's top by looking at the dictionary meanings of blow and top.
