Please have a look at the following sentence: "But our of the 269 mutual funds that reserach firm Morningstar throws into the alternative category, only about half have been around since the market crash of 2008".

Please explain to me the meaning of "throw into" and "have been around". Many thanks.

"Throw into" here means categorize. Think of sorting various types of mutual funds as tossing them into one box or another. They have thrown these into the box labeled "alternative."

"Have been around" is talking about existence. If it "was around" at a certain date, that means it existed then.
