"The children yelled to stop."
Is this grammatically acceptable? Why or why not?
This battle rages in our department!
Thanks!
Informally acceptable, I would say, but a more formally complete structure would require specification of a "recipient" of the action, e.g.
The children yelled at them to stop.
And that would be a pretty informal acceptability IMO, with many disputing it.
Agreed. Definitely informal only!
