    Cool Rocky Raccoon

    Hi,

What does "hoedown" mean in the lyrics of Rocky Raccoon (Beatles)

...Now she and her man who called himself Dan
Were in the next room at the hoedown....

Usually it means a dance - country western style. A similar word is shindig.

No. They were in the immediate vicinity of the (at) hoedown, they were at the hoedown, they were not next (by) to it.

She and her man, Dan, were at the hoedown. Rocky was in the room next door. So from Rocky's perspective (and that of the narrator of the song) she and Dan were in the next room, where the hoedown was taking place.
