"A given" is something that is sure, certain, taken for granted.
Perhaps the meaning is "Don't take this for granted. You can't assume you would have it. It was a gift, not an obligation, and you shouldn't have had any expectation about receiving it."
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
