I did an online test and I don't understand why this sentence is said to be correct


There was plenty of time you need not have hurried. (why needed is not used here)

There was plenty of time; you need not have hurried.

Now it's OK......NEED can function either as a modal, as in your sentence, or a lexical verb -

You didn't need to hurry.

Who said that said that sentence was correct? It should be

'There was plenty of time; you need not have hurried.'

'You need not have hurried' means 'You did not need to hurry'.
