1) Delhi lived up to its reputation of being unsafe for women when a woman was raped inside the bus on 17th September.

Can you please tell me the meaning of lived up to its reputation ? In what sence it has been used. How can I be proficient in using such type of phrases.


2) People generally say - Are you through with this. It means that somebody is asking that you have completed a work or not ?

Is it identical to word "complete". Is it a slang ?

3) People generally speaks a sentence during conversation - You Know.

What does it mean ?

Is it the synonymn of Complete.

The phrase lived up to its reputation implies that there is a reputation and that what happened confirms this reputation as true. It's the type of phrase you wouldn't want to use because it implies negativity.

2) No. It means to be done, finished using something. You may not have completed the magazine, book, using a particular item, but the question is whether you stopped or finished with the item, permanent or temporarily. And it is not slang

3) Statements spoken as interjections grow out of habit. For a meaning of this habit you should consult a psychologist or a psychiatrist. It is NOT a synonym of complete.
