1) Delhi lived up to its reputation of being unsafe for women when a woman was raped inside the bus on 17th September.
Can you please tell me the meaning of lived up to its reputation ? In what sence it has been used. How can I be proficient in using such type of phrases.
2) People generally say - Are you through with this. It means that somebody is asking that you have completed a work or not ?
Is it identical to word "complete". Is it a slang ?
3) People generally speaks a sentence during conversation - You Know.
What does it mean ?
Please guide.
1- It had a bad reputation and it was deserved- it was unsafe.
2- It's more like 'finished'. It's not slang, just a phrasal verb.
3- You know- it has no real meaning, just checks that the other person is following the conversation or gives the speaker a chance to think of what to say next.

In the context of the news story, should this "1- It had a bad reputation and it was deserved- it was unsafe. " be "It has a bad reputation and it is deserved- it is unsafe."?Originally Posted by tdol
As Tdol says, it has no real "meaning", but is used to check understanding or to make sure someone is listening to you. It's a discourse marker.Originally Posted by rajan
