    Default so much as

    Hi,

    What does this sentence mean?

She isn't so much ill as depressed.

    Thanks a lot

You might think she was ill, but she was really depressed.

He's not so much classically handsome as cute.
She's no so much snobbish as really shy.

People have said he's good looking, and he doesn't look like a tall, dark and handsome movie star (classically handsom) but he has a boyish appeal.

She doesn't talk to people, but don't think she's being a snob. She's just shy.

I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
