What the writer is saying is that addressing someone by their name or otherwise acknowledging that you know him/remember him will please that person in the short term and build a solid relationship in the long term.
If you take the time to say "Hi Fred, did you have a good week-end?" on Monday morning as you walk past Fred's office/cubicle instead of just nodding at him or ignoring him completely, you'll make a positive impression with him.
