english Why are there 26 letters in the alphabets but 44 sounds in English language

The answer to your question is, "Because that is the way our alphabet has happened to develop". By the way, there are not exactly 44 sounds in English. The number of sounds varies from dialect to dialect, and on the precise definition of the word 'sound'.
