Mr X asked Mr Y about the books he read in the past and which of them had the greatest impact on him (on Mr Y).

Mr Y replied: Not much stands out as doing the trick, it's my relation to them that made the difference.

I'm not sure I understand the bolded part? What does it exactly mean?
