Sociology Statement of Purpose
I have always been passionately interested in society’s influence on our actions and structure of society ,as these issues are relevant to everyone in everyday life .I believe that it is integral to understanding the political and cultural issues in our world. The thing that draws me to Sociology is that it teaches there are no right/wrong answers when it comes how people live together. What is most imperative for a sociologist is the ability to evaluate evidence, choose between possible explanations and make the appropriate arguments. In addition to this ,I have always been interested in the interactions of human beings and on a large scale how human behavior affects society .I have a particular interest in social care which is an area which cannot be embarked upon lightly. I am concerned in understanding individuals who experience difficulties interacting positively with the systems within the world in which they live. For example ,the family, the education and the law are often experienced in a negative way .I have a genuine interest in people and their behavior. I have a strong sense of justice and often find it easier to advocate on behalf of others than I do myself. I am incensed by discrimination against those who are disadvantaged within.
When I was pursuing my bachelor’s degree in political science in the paper Political Sociology I happened to come across certain views like Marxism. Marxism as a key perspective, when discussing the application of sociology in our society, has appealed to me in realizing the ways in which a particular social institution acts or is used to benefit capitalism. The recognition that capitalism is used to create an ideological state has inspired me to research further the idea that …“Capital is a dead labour, which, vampire-like lives only sucking living labour, and lives the more ,the more labour it sucks” .I have felt somewhat sympathetic to the Marxist perspective ,living in India ,my eyes have always been open to economic oppression and the false consciousness that many of us live in .Sometimes it Is easy to feel as though there is an invisible force ,making life harder for the poor whilst helping rich. The Functionalist view that everything in society serves a purpose does seem to make sense , however I find it hard to believe one can see crimes such as rape and genocide a having a function .While doing my Master’s degree I had the opportunity to learn about globalization, current and proposed social policies and also I gained a deeper insight into the perspectives.
As already mentioned I am very dissatisfied with the various forms of inequality that is practiced in our society. Gender discrimination and women’s development is a widely discussed matter even though awareness regarding this subject is often ignored .In India, issues like HIV/AIDS, illiteracy and poverty are experienced more by women than men. Girls face problems to access good education which limit their opportunities to succeed even in today’s globalized world .Though women’s participation in work has been increasing globally, they are faced with wage discrepancies and differences when compared to what men earn .This is true not only in case of India and other developing countries but also in the agricultural and rural sector in the developed countries. This kind of practice of social inequality is something which I strongly condemn. Furthermore, racial inequality is practiced world wide. One of the most important issue with regard to inequality which needs to be taken care of is the practice of inequality in the Caste system. Living in India, I have not only read about these kind of inequalities being practiced but also experienced it. The widely spread institution that is deeply involved is the institution of marriage , where people are only supposed to marry someone that belongs to the same caste. My dissatisfaction with this kind of social inequalities being practiced is also one of the reasons as to why I am hooked to the workings of the society namely social structures and their impact on individuals and the society as a whole .I believe that a firm understanding of society is the first step towards overcoming social problems. It also drives me to study sociology from a political perspective. The study of political sociology helps us to understand not only social issues but also the underlying reasons for social change and dilemmas occurring throughout society and see relationships between people and the state. Politics and sociology are interdisciplinary ,so by studying both I have been able to view the world from a different perspective.
Sociology is a subject that has always affected me on a personal level. At the secondary level of my education I have been involved in activities like fundraising for charities, teaching younger students about Equality.
I am particularly interested in Sociology where I find it fascinating and refreshing to be able to take myself out of the box and examine society objectively and analytically. I find sociology an intriguing subject and feel that it is relevant to us all. I am keen to push the boundaries of my existing ideas and to explore and absorb many others .
My objective in doing Phd in Soiciology is to get as much knowledge and skills as possible to apply in the future work. I believe that the University will provide me with an opportunity not only for extending my educational knowledge into the subject area but also pursuing my personal interests into society which the university offers .
I am a committed and reliable student who is passionate about her work and I feel that University will become the ideal environment in which my studies and I will be able to expand in order for me to thrive as a person. The prospects of a challenging and demanding degree motivated me towards success and create the foundation for a triumphant career.
