Political Science Statement of Purpose
It is not true that I was fascinated with Politics and international relations since my childhood. I became ambitious in studying Politics when I was in the higher secondary level of education .At this level along with politics I had a broad array of knowledge about various subjects like Economics, Geography . .During these years , I started listening to BBC world service and reading internationally recognized journals and magazines to follow current political international affairs. Furthermore ,going into the depth of the subject, I happened to read an extract which states ,according to Aristotle “If liberty and equality are chiefly thought to be found in democracy they will be best attained when all persons alike share in government to the utmost. Reflection on the disparity between the philosophers idealized maxim of democracy and my own dissatisfaction with the actual , gave cause to my decision to become an academic in political science .
It was in the year 2001,I decided to get into the honours program in order to broaden my knowledge and understanding of political science where I earned a bachelor’s degree. While undergoing this course ,I began to perceive the world from the political perspective .I started to realize the diversities of the constantly changing world in which we live in ,wanting to understand and explore the causes and effects of the current and future human interaction. During these years, I happened to cultivate a view that in this age there is no such thing that can be kept out of politics ,all issues are political issues .I began to observe politics as the power to effect change ,to make a difference whether that is to the detriment or advantage to the society as a whole .Through my knowledge about Political Theory and its concepts of justice ,equality and liberty ,i was confirmed that politics enforces all that we hold dear ,social justice ,equality ,tolerance. Politics is an ever changing debate which requires skills in analysis, debate and research whilst also possessing an open mind to be emphatic to the views of the society as a whole .The study of Political Science at the bachelor’s level has allowed me to look further into the dynamics of American Politics, Britain politics ,Indian Government and politics encompassed with trips to Parliament and the Senate .At this level ,I also obtained knowledge about Political thought ,different political thinkers and their ideologies.
When I was pursuing my bachelor’s degree in political science ,the classes which interested me most were in the international relations branch. International relations covers many different aspects of foreign countries ,thus an interdisciplinary approach is needed to study this subject .No single discipline could satisfy my passion for learning about other countries and their governments ,economic structures ,cultures and languages. Many speak of days and events that change the world in a matter of seconds ,9/11 is surely accredited as being such a day .The resultant political hysteria caught my attention ,nature of politics on an international scale became a fascination. It was primarily through the emergence of the perceived post 9/11 threat that has given me the desire to examine the political climate globally and domestically. So this particular event also led me to believe and I became determined that a Master’s degree in International relations is a natural choice for me ,as it will help me to further expand my knowledge and understanding of the world.
In addition to this, the level of poverty and governmental corruption in India and in other developing and third world countries jarred me and thus my determination to understand why social injustice occurs and how to combat it formed. This is also one of the reason why I developed a fascination with politics .So, while doing my Masters I read the lectures of Amartya Sen ‘s Global Inequality and Human security ‘and also explored books introducing me to political philosophy ,sociology and psychology –all of which helped me to try to understand the root of world problems .I also found Sen’s lecture particularly persuasive and agreed with him whilst globalization has lessened poverty and made the poor any poorer ,it is still unjust that the impoverished receive only a piece and not the fair share of the cumulative benefits of globalization .Furthermore, researching the works of Machiavelli that ends justifies means reflects the attitude rich nations seem to have towards developing countries .Also, through the various works of the NGO’s which I used to read in newspapers ,I began to understand that NGO’s work helped to understand globalization ‘s positive effects on developing and less developing countries. My interest in Feminism apart from the theoretical level also developed on a practical level by volunteering on campaigns in our locality to end violence on women. This also broadened my view relating to the use of torture in the War on Terror .Apart from this, studying Political Economy in this curriculum has given me an interest in domestic and fiscal policy and understanding of the tumultuous legacy of previous government when considering the nation’s finances. The study of Political sociology encourages research of new and differing theoretical views of all society’s institution .I have also enjoyed studying the sociological and political ideologies of Marx .Though his views seemed too radical his interpretations of society still resonate all over the world .The rich exploit the poor with little constriction by society’s institutions such as the government and the legal systems .During these years, I also obatained knowledge about Politics of Southeast Asia which was my special paper .
After completion of the Master’s degree in International Relations from Jadavpur University in the year 2006 ,I desired to broaden my spectrum of knowledge in this subject and do research in this field but since I wanted to be financially independent then focus on my research work .I started doing jobs which I feel today was a wrong decision as I got diverted from the main aim of my life. I worked for some years and then I realized that I was not satisfied with any of those jobs which I was doing. I started to reflect on what my conscience was telling me .I realised that I was sidetracked from my passion for politics and social change which was strongly reflected in my non academic activities .My shared interests in current affairs and international politics often resulted in heated debate outside of classes ,something that I relish. On a personal level also, NGO’s work of educating the young people to prevent themselves from having STD’S like AIDS motivates me to study and do research in tis subject.
It is my entire ambition that studying International Studies and researching on this subject will give me knowledge to be able to head an NGO which will aim to improve circumstances and the prospects of the people and to act on concerns and issues detrimental to the wellbeing or prospects of the society as a whole .I am also looking forward to studying International Relations and pursuing Phd in order to understand particularly as to how relationships vary between countries .Also since this subject combines several subjects which I feel passionate about and enjoy studying such as different economic and political systems ,Global issues related to terror ,History ,Law and Contemporary society.
I also believe that it is vital to develop a better understanding of International Relations on an individual level because of the constantly changing political and financial climate in shaping the world we live in .Also I am interested in studying relationships between the developed world ,the third world and the developing countries .In the future these relationships will become more and more important and it would be beneficial if more people improved their understanding of this.
It is important to enjoy life ,i love experiencing new cultures as I believe it broaden’s horizon. I am very passionate about music and that many of the lyrics of the current songs are a strong reflection of current society.
I am eager to pursue academic life in higher education as I am a committed and dedicated student .Furthermore I am eager to begin a new era of my life in the University of Kentucky .When asked why I want my political education to a Phd level ,the answer is simple .I want t be a participant and not an observer in the molding of the ever changing diverse society through politics by doing research in this subject and in the future working in an university or college to impart my knowledge in politics and lead others to be a participant and work towards the betterment of the society.
