1)What does the word marked in the below sentence mean?


The War of the Austrian Succession marked the beginning of the power struggle between Britain and France and of European military ascendancy and political intervention in the Indian subcontinent.


Can we replace it with" considered as"?


2)Is "of" before European military ascendancy necessary?

Can we replace it with" considered as"? Yes, but I would consider its use as a little less formal or "unofficial" compared with "marked". For me "marked" suggests some more authoritative agreement or pronouncement.


2)Is "of" before European military ascendancy necessary? No, and I would use "beginnings" and replace both "and of" with a comma.
