    NOT A TEACHER

    (1) I am also a learner, so I understand how confusing it is.

    (2) I think that it is very important for you to remember one basic thing about the

    present perfect:

It refers to something that started in the past and STILL touches your life.

    (3) My parents brought me to my city in the 1940's. I am still living in this city in

2011. So something started in the past (I started to live here in the 1940's) and

it (my living in this city) continues to "touch" my life. So I say "I have lived here

since the 1940's/ for more than 60 years."

    (4) If you go to a movie tonight, what will you tell your friends tomorrow:

    (a) That was the best movie that I ever saw in my life.

    OR

    (b) That was the best movie that I have ever seen in my life.

Let's say that you started seeing movies 15 years ago. Do you still see movies?

Of course. Something that started 15 years ago still "touches" your life. So that

is why 4b is the "correct" answer. (P.S. Many native speakers say 4a.)

    (5) Please look at the top of this page and find a box with the title "search."

Please type in the words "present perfect." You will find many interesting lessons to

help you understand the present perfect.
