It is not acceptable. It is also difficult to correct, because the presence of food which is past it's 'best-before' date does not affect the efficiency (i.e, smooth operation of the motor) of the fridge How about this? -

To avoid risk of contamination of food in your fridge, make sure that you regularly remove all food that has been there beyond its recommended storage time.

However, a teacher correct my sentence as following.

(1) To keep the fridge clean and sanitary, we must discard any food which is moldy, rancid or has spoiled.

(2) To keep the fridge more efficient, please dispose of any food that's past its expiration date.
