    Default no-win shift

    What is the following in red saying?

    Laura sensed the no-win shift of the conversation. She respected Cliff's business development skills and appreciated the responsibility she had been given..... She chose her words carefully, simply reflecting back his statements while remaining noncommittal.

    The conversation shifted (changed) and it was heading down the path of neither side getting what they wanted (a no-win).
    I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
