We try in each volume to represent the varieties of tones and voices and attitudes that keep the genre vigorous and responsive to the changing realities out of which it emerges, in science and daily life.
(David G. Hartwell; Year’s Best SF 16)
I suppose 'in science and daily life' modifies 'the changing realities'.
Am I right?
(Can 'in science and daily life', at least theoretically, modify 'the varieties of...'?)
Thanks.
I think both alternatives are possible - and perhaps more than that!
Which tells me that this is not a very well-written sentence to begin with... In my opinion, if referents are as ambiguous as this one clearly is, then the writer is responsible for any difficulties we readers may be having!![]()
