...millions of ringgit was/were paid... This is typically Mahathirianism. Mahathir condemned US president George W Bush and is hailed as a third world hero, when at the same time, millions of ringgit were paid by some consultancy company for Mahathir to meet Bush for 20 minutes.
Should 'was' be used instead of 'were'?

Millions of ringgits were paid ....Context is always important; labelling is rarely important.
