"The biography indicates how close Huckleberry Finn came to not being written"
I don't get the bold part. What exactly does the author mean by that?
It was quite possible that Mark Twain might not have had the chance to write Huckleberry Finn. Perhaps there was a possibility of him accepting a job that would have taken up all his time; or perhaps he nearly died before he started writing. Only the biography can tell you.

I completely agree with 5jj on both points.
Your teacher's interpretation is a mystery to me.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
